Kudos for Kirkeberg
Although I have attended a number of universities and have enrolled in many classes in my 80 years here on earth, I am writing to tell you that the most enjoyable classes I ever participated in were those of Max Kirkeberg. Not only did I learn a lot about my native city, but I also discovered an excellent teacher: warm hearted, extremely knowledgeable, and fun to be around. Congratulations on your great cover story ("Getting Street Smart with Max Kirkeberg," Spring/ Summer 2003).

Awed by Her Courage
It was serendipitous that the article about Mary Felstiner ("Breaking Barriers," Spring/ Summer 2003) appeared just as I was thinking about her. As I read it, I felt sad thinking that the rheumatoid arthritis must have already begun when I was a student in her Latin American history class. Mary made sure that we learned every other student’s name by the second session. She helped us get in the mindset of the conquistadores in order to understand the time period. Her lessons were always exciting. Mary is a gifted woman and, without a doubt, the best teacher I have ever encountered. I am awed by her perseverance and courage.

Thanks for the Memories
Your Spring/Summer 2003 issue was a bell-ringer for this old Gator. Being now 55 years beyond my days at SF State, I have tolerantly accepted the rarity of anything that would spark those old-campus memories of mine. But you turned me on with a double-barreled hit!

First were the photos that accompanied your cover story on Max Kirkeberg’s "San Francisco on Foot" class, centered on Alamo Square, a block from where I I lived in those days and an uphill walk from the old campus.

The second hit was the remembrance piece by Al Martinez. I recall Al pretty well, though I was fading back from SF State’s journalism program just as he was coming into it. We were both string beans in those days (it's amazing how the years change the profile) and both literary neophytes. I’m glad to see that Al took it all the way up the ladder.
Thank you so much. I hope that you have more vintage material up your editorial sleeve.
