Caps Off to...

Vartan Gregorian, president of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, was the recipient of an honorary doctor of humane letters degree at SFSU's 103rd commencement ceremony on May 29. The former SFSU professor told the crowd of 7,500 SFSU graduates, "Change the world. Leave it better than you found it."

E-LOAN CEO and co founder Chris Larsen (B.S., '84) was named Alumnus of the Year. He encouraged the Class of 2004 to fight corruption in business and politics: "Keep your eyes open. Try to get angry when you see things that aren't right."

Former San Francisco Mayor Willie L. Brown Jr.(B.A., '55) became Dr. Brown. After receiving an honorary doctor of laws degree, he told the new graduates, "Your prospects are virtually unlimited."

Professor Gary Selnow, the recipient of the President's Medal, encouraged humanitarianism: "In the global war against terrorism you might not take up the sword, but you can offer up your human talents, your professional skills, your youthful energies and enthusiasm."

During a reception the previous evening, SFSU welcomed four new members to the Alumni Association Hall of Fame: sound designer Christopher Boyes (B.A., '85), San Francisco Police Chief Heather Fong (M.S.W., '88), children's musician Ella Jenkins(B.A., '51), and disc jockey Carter B. Smith (B.A., '59).
