On Feb. 15, dignitaries from China and state and city officials joined SFSU faculty, students and administrators in Seven Hills Conference Center to inaugurate the Confucius Institute. The Chinese-language center at SFSU joins branches across the globe responding to the increasing need for instruction of Chinese and Chinese-language teacher training. The program was developed by China's National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. "As a leading source of teachers for more than a century and currently the only one of the California State University's 23 campuses to offer a bilingual teacher certification program, we already have a strong base from which to start," SF State President Robert A. Corrigan told the audience. The University's Confucius Institute is a joint effort of the colleges of Education, Humanities and Extended Learning.
