Gerald Haslam(B.A., '63;M.A., '65) received the Delbert and Edith Wylder Award for exceptional service to the Western Literature Association. His latest book is "Haslam's Valley" (Heyday Books, 2005). His short story "Two-Headed Man Hangs Self" was published in the fall 2005 issue of Chiron Review. Barbara Lekisch (B.A., '65) is the author of Great West Books' "Tahoe Place Names" and "Embracing Scenes About Lakes Tahoe and Donner, Painters, Illustrators and Sketch Artists, 1855-1915." She used her German degree to translate the Tahoe portion of cartographer Charles Preuss' account of the John C. Fremont expedition over the Sierra Nevada. Tomales High School Italian teacher Catherine Balestrieri Burton(B.A., '69; M.A., '77) was awarded the title of Cavaliere dell'Ordine della Stella della Solidarietà Italiana (Knight of the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity) by Italy's President, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi. The award is conferred upon Italians abroad and foreigners for special contributions to the prestige and honor of the Italian Republic.
