A Burning Desire to Celebrate

There was some unusually hot nightlife on campus Oct. 7 when the Fire Pixie performers took part in a gala celebration of the Cesar Chavez Student Center's 30th anniversary.

Approximately 100 people gathered on the center's Malcolm X Plaza to take in the twirling batons of fire, a performance by the Lion Dancers, live music from Bayonics and a speech by activist Dolores Huerta.

In 1962 Huerta co-founded with Cesar Chavez the United Farm Workers Association. "It is the working people of the world that built the wealth of this country," she told students, faculty and staff. "They are the ones with the hands who built this building, the ones picking our food every day."

The gala was part of a month-long celebration honoring "30 Years of Student Vision and Power" that included a series on the 1968 student strikes at SF State and a student film festival.
