Reporters, special guests and distinguished SFSU alumni gathered in SFSU's McKenna Theatre Oct. 26 for San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom's second state of the city address. Newsom began by tipping his hat to several SFSU alumni who have helped keep things running smoothly in the city this past year: San Francisco Supervisor Tom Ammiano (M.A., '65) for "helping to shepherd our [city] budget to unanimous passage," and Police Chief Heather Fong (B.A., '82; M.A., '88) for having shown "tremendous leadership in the face of great challenges." "It is unorthodox, I admit, to deliver the state of the city at a state university, but the choice was made with purpose," Newsom told the audience. "It is on our university, community college and high school campuses that our future is taking shape." The mayor pointed to SFSU as a key training ground for the scientists and researchers of tomorrow, and announced some exciting off-campus plans: a new city high school focused on science and technology. SFSU is partnering with San Francisco government, the city school district, the University of California, City College and the private biotech and commercial life sciences sector to launch the Science and Technology Academy. Ground has already been broken at its new home, the city's budding biotech headquarters at Mission Bay. -- Adrianne Bee
