East Meets West On Feb. 15, dignitaries from China and state and city officials joined SFSU faculty, students and administrators in Seven Hills Conference Center to inaugurate the Confucius Institute. The Chinese-language center at SFSU joins branches across the globe responding to the increasing need for instruction of Chinese and Chinese-language teacher training. The program was developed by China's National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. "As a leading source of teachers for more than a century and currently the only one of the California State University's 23 campuses to offer a bilingual teacher certification program, we already have a strong base from which to start," SF State President Robert A. Corrigan told the audience. The University's Confucius Institute is a joint effort of the colleges of Education, Humanities and Extended Learning.
