The Right Stuff
Rep. Bill Thomas, a Republican, on your cover -- I thought I died and went to heaven. For a while there, I thought SFSU Magazine was in a universe free of conservative/Republican people of note, and then your winter 2005 issue arrived. I would also welcome a feature on S.I. Hayakawa, president of SFSU and U.S. senator from California -- a genius and gifted statesman -- and the many others of our persuasion, in your magazine. After all, a bird needs a left wing and a right wing in order to fly.

Daly City I just wanted to chime in on the fantastic articles and news from SF State. Your profile of Rep. Bill Thomas gave some insight into one of our country's leaders, and it was especially interesting to read about a Republican who studied at a predominantly progressive, left-leaning campus. Your profiles of others such as alumna Caroline Vaughan at the United Nations and local students doing well are very uplifting and make me proud that I'm an alumnus of San Francisco State University.

Walnut Creek Hurray for Housing
It is quite amazing to receive updates on the growth of the campus. I enjoyed reading news of the acquisition of affordable housing at Stonestown Apartments. For me, the charm of the city was part of the lure to go to school at SFSU. When I attended, during the '60s, we could just about afford living off campus; rent had not yet skyrocketed. Thank goodness you have vision to keep living expenses more reasonable for students.

Reno Katrina Relief Story Strikes a Chord
The article "Weathering the Storm" in the winter issue brought tears to my eyes. I especially liked knowing that animals were reunited with their families thanks to alumnus Ken White -- and bless you all at SFSU for taking in the Louisiana students and helping them to continue their education.

Stockton Good Ole Days
During the late '60s and early '70s we referred to the University as "the yard." The energy was magnetic, inspiring -- an environment conducive to leaders. The emerging social issues gave young students an opportunity to expand their consciousness with the hope of transforming their immediate environment. Reading the magazine brings back echoes from "the yard."

San Francisco I have just read a copy of your delightful summer issue that brings back memories of the best time of my life. I was also a member of the SFSU Theatre Arts Department during the '70s. The thing that amazes me is the number of famous people who floated through school at the same time. Annette Bening was not the only one to go on and make a living in the arts. Greg Proops, Michael McShane, Dana Carvey, Carl Weathers and anyone else I may have forgotten all were involved with our wonderful professors and did some amazing theatre at the time. I wish to congratulate them on their careers and the University for fostering such creative talent.
