SF State Alumni in the Workplace
In response to your question in the last issue "Are You Surrounded by SF State Alumni in Your Workplace?," yes, we are! The LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired is a nonprofit in Northern California providing solutions for people who are blind or visually impaired. It turns out we have 11 graduates from SF State. One more SF State connection: our organization was founded by alumna Rose Resnick (M.A., '61).

San Francisco I am writing to tell you that I may very well be surrounded by some "future SF State alumni" in my workplace. I am a first- grade teacher at River Oaks Charter School in Stockton. Each month we highlight a different college, to stress that higher education is an option for everyone. In February we put the spotlight on SF State. We spent a great deal of time talking about the campus. As you can see from the photo below, my students were excited to contemplate the possibility of one day earning their degrees from this wonderful University.

In a League of Our Own
In response to "A League of Our Own" in the fall 2006 issue, my undergraduate education was at Stanford, but my best education was at SF State as a graduate student in the English-Language Arts program. I taught for 35 years at Diablo Valley College. For my own teaching, I used many of my SF State professors as models, and I say with all due modesty that I was successful throughout my career.

One of Dale Perkins'(B.A., '51; M.A., '53) fondest memories of his student days is creating the artwork for this sign announcing the new campus at 19th and Holloway. "I believe it was Dean Mary Ward who requested the artwork," says Perkins, who worked as a staff artist for the student newspaper and annual yearbook. "I had an office in Music Alley at the old campus. SF State radio announcer Dave McElhatton (B.A., '51), who later joined KCBS, had an office next door. We became friends and later, fraternity brothers. To this day, my wife, Evie Perkins (B.A., '50), and I cherish our many friendships that began at SF State."
