One for the Books Plans for the expansion and renovation of the University's J. Paul Leonard Library just received a major boost. With Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's signature of the postsecondary education facilities bill SB 682 in September, California appropriated an additional $21 million in state funding for the project. "This bill not only secures funding for a crucial facility on one of the largest campuses in the California State University system, but also for a library that will benefit the public at large," says state Sen. Carole Migden, D-San Francisco, who introduced the bill to help SF State defray rising construction costs. With more than $100 million in funding from the state's Public Buildings Construction Fund and anticipated support from alumni and friends, the new Library will serve as the campus gateway to information, combining traditional library resources with innovative technology, creating a new learning environment. The expansion and renovation will offer new group-study rooms, larger and more-open common areas, a café, new laptop stations and more desktop computer workstations. The automated Library Retrieval System will allow the facility to house 1.5 million books more efficiently. "The University is grateful to Sen. Migden, the Legislature and Gov. Schwarzenegger for support of this great public asset," SF State President Robert A. Corrigan says. The Library will remain open during construction, expected to begin in 2008.
