Thanks for the Coverage When Professor Emeritus Robert Bechtle discovered his "slightly naughty" artistic process of projecting photo images onto a canvas and then filling in the details, he found, "That was like a curtain lifting on all kinds of possibilities" ("Inside the Photoreal World of Robert Bechtle," Spring 2006). When someone lifts a curtain we get the inside view, the inside story. I had seen the extraordinary exhibition of Bechtle's paintings, highlighting 30 years of his work. But the University magazine profile gave us that larger view: the story behind the canvas. Throughout the piece, Rachel Howard added depth and range to the portrait of Bechtle, filling in many of the details his life we might not have seen or imagined. Thank you for lifting the curtain on this artist's life, and providing us with an insightful profile of yet another of the talented artists, writers, scholars who contribute to the vibrant artistic atmosphere one finds at SF State. Toni Mirosevich Associate Professor Creative Writing, SF State It was a thrill to see Professor Emeritus Bob Bechtle's watercolor painting on the cover of the University magazine, reminding us of our distinctive Bay Area light (on those precious sunny days at least) and our distinguished faculty in the Art Department here. Many of our current faculty and alumni are also receiving critical acclaim for their creative work, further expanding the University's legacy in the arts. Thanks for this recognition of the importance of the arts on our campus. Mark Johnson Professor and Gallery Director Art Department, SF State Kudos Your spring issue certainly riveted my attention. I read it cover to cover, including the President's Message, and took a long, hard look at the birds on the inside back cover. Keep up the excellent work. John Heath B.A., '50 Fayetteville, Arkansas Editor's Note Notice anything different about our cover? We are no longer SFSU, but rather SF State Magazine. The magazine title is consistent with the new University logo. The new name emphasizes one of the best characteristics of the campus -- the great city in which it's located. Research indicates that SF State is the abbreviation most people use in the first place. It's also easier to pronounce than "SFSU" (just try saying it five times fast).
