A Message from President Corrigan By its very nature,SF State Magazine is a testament to the power of words and images, as we strive with each issue to communicate the many ways this University transforms lives and builds opportunities. In this issue, we delve even deeper, exploring the thought, the action -- the risks -- that lie behind the messages that are so much a part of our lives as citizens, audiences and learners. Cinema Professor and Chair Steve Ujlaki discuses filmmaking and his deeply held commitment to "visual literacy." Students work with city leadership to find the words to motivate life-changing volunteers. State Sen. Carole Migden speaks out on behalf of the J. Paul Leonard Library, and delivers $21 million in additional support for this cornerstone of University communication. The Alexander String Quartet uses the imagery of great works of art to help train the next generation of music professionals. Alumni use paint and sculpture to make thought-provoking statements about urban development. And, in a cover story that will undoubtedly change the way you view your daily newspaper or newscast, alumni Lucian Read and Steve Centanni share harrowing tales of their work to bring us a close-up view of conflict-torn regions, keeping us abreast of ever-changing world affairs. Throughout these pages you will also find words of service to community, of fostering international understanding, of discovery, of excellence and of achievement. Messages that convey the perspectives and values that are uniquely SF State and describe our University's long history as a wellspring of regional, national and global intellectual leadership. In these pages you will also read words of thanks. A special supplement to SF State Magazine recognizes with gratitude the individuals, families, corporations and nonprofits that supported SF State this past year with generous gifts.
