An egoless event. That's how Professor Stanley Goldberg came to think of community service during his work as a hospice volunteer. His essay provides just one example of the many ways our faculty and students continue to touch the lives of others, sometimes quietly and sometimes more dramatically. As our nation enters a new year and remains engaged in war, I take comfort in San Francisco State University's continued commitment to civic engagement. The strife of the world may be beyond our control, but we can find ways to help our local communities thrive. I am continually inspired by the efforts of our faculty and students who find time to do this in addition to their work and family responsibilities. Professor Goldberg writes that when it comes to service, we receive infinitely more than we give. Indeed, the best part of volunteering our time and energy to serve others is the life lessons we receive. Good citizenship comes in many forms. I am proud that this University graduates citizens who understand the importance of both making their voices heard and putting action behind their beliefs. During the past semester, the campus was abuzz with student volunteers registering their peers to vote and there were long lines at our on-campus polling place. In this issue, you will find many other reasons to take pride in a connection to SFSU. There is no better proof of the quality of our education than the success of our students. Emmy-nominated actor Jeffrey Tambor and acclaimed jazz singer Kitty Margolis are just two alumni who developed their talents under the guidance of SFSU faculty. From our outstanding SF State News Web site, recently ranked by Google as one of the top ten most popular college and university news services in the nation, to our creative uses of technology in and outside the classroom, San Francisco State makes the most of the potential of the electronic information age. In this issue, we have included a feature on some of the ways that we are using the Web to make life easier for SFSU students, whether in applying for admission, registering for classes or getting grades. We hope that once again, SFSU Magazine will inspire, educate and entertain you.
