Bravo on another excellent issue of SFSU Magazine. I particularly enjoyed the behind-the-scenes look at the production of "Assassins" ("Killer Performance," Spring/Summer 2004). I always knew the University's theatre arts department was a standout. Recently, I was wearing my SFSU alumni sweatshirt when a woman ran up to me and proudly pointed out her own SFSU alumni sweatshirt. "Isn't that a great school?" she said. "I loved the time I spent there." It certainly was wonderful to chat with an alumna who also thinks the world of SFSU.

Vancouver, Wash. One for the Books
A friend shared the latest issue of SFSU Magazine with me and I was fascinated with the article on the plans to remake the library into a state-of-the-art facility ("Extreme Makeover," Spring/Summer 2004). The book retrieval system with a robotic crane sounds like an amazing asset to students on the go. Good to know that your university is focusing its attention on its library. I can't think of a more important place on a college campus!

Thanks for the article on the Urban Studies degree program for Delancey Street participants ("No Longer a Dream," Spring/Summer 2004). The program epitomizes what a university should be: not an ivory-tower enclave, separate from the city that surrounds it, but an integral part of its community and a learning resource for all of its citizens. I also like the fact that the teachers are practitioners, not just academics. Good things happen when an institution like SF State pairs its intellectual capital with the real-life experience of the community it serves.

Artist Dale Perkins (B.A., '51; M.A., '53) has made a generous donation to help SFSU Magazine continue building a bridge to its readers near and far: 11" x 17" posters of his "City by the Bridge" watercolor painting, shown at left.
