Behind the Scenes

Two students designing and drawing a comic book layout

In the fall of 2023, the SF State Magazine team approached School of Liberal Studies Associate Professor Nick Sousanis with a question: Would any of the students in the Comic Studies program he founded at the University be interested in contributing art that illustrates what they’re learning? The answer was yes, and soon Biology major Xiomara Guevara and Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts major Ashley Nortman (above) were picking up their pens and getting to work. The artwork came together over the course of several months as Guevara and Nortman, guided by Sousanis, developed preliminary sketches and layouts (below) that eventually gelled into the two-page graphic novel-style feature story in our Spring/Summer 2024 issue.
