President’s Message

Lynn Mahoney

When many of us think about our college days, we remember the folks who helped us achieve our academic dreams. I recall the resident assistant my freshman year who helped me overcome my homesickness, the college writing tutor who helped me become a better writer and the American Studies professor who instilled in me the passion and confidence to earn a Ph.D. Today’s San Francisco State University students are no different. In fact, they need greater support with the cost of attending college, the cost of housing and the complexities of preparing for 21st-century careers. The demands on young people have all grown.

As you will read in the pages that follow, SFSU has a long and proud history of supporting students. And, even as budgets have become increasingly challenging, we work hard to support our students in the classroom and across all their needs. Our goal is to ensure that our students earn their degrees and are launched into rewarding careers. But we can’t do this alone — your support is critical. The thriving Guardian Scholars program serves its students so well in large part due to the generosity of alumni and community members. I have never been more proud of San Francisco than I was when our new mayor, Daniel Lurie, chose a successful attorney and an SFSU alumna — a former Guardian Scholar — to swear him in as mayor in January.

Thanks to your support and engagement, our students thrive, and every May at Commencement, thousands more become well-educated alumni. Thank you!
